EXP J1 Expansion Joint System
Polyurethane nosing system with EPDM extrusion — waterproof & trafficable
The EXP J1 is a high-performance, flush surface mechanical expansion joint engineered for demanding trafficable environments. Developed as a next-generation solution, it employs hybrid polyurethane nosings in place of traditional rubber, delivering superior abrasion resistance, chemical durability and long service life under heavy vehicular and pedestrian loading.
The system incorporates a double-laminated Hypalon waterproof membrane bonded to the substrate, bridging the joint gap to provide a continuous watertight barrier. A purpose-formulated EPDM extrusion is housed between the polyurethane nosings, anchored through the membrane into the structural deck via chemical fixings.
EXP J1 is equally suited to new construction and refurbishment projects, accommodating a broad range of joint widths and finish types.

Hybrid polyurethane nosings outlast rubber in high-wear trafficked areas
Unaffected by oils, fuels, de-icing salts and common cleaning agents
Continuous membrane beneath extrusion ensures zero water ingress
EPDM extrusion and PU nosings retain performance over decades
No trip hazard — level finish compatible with all deck finishes
Nosings and extrusion replaceable independently of membrane
Surfaces must be float-finished and abraded to remove laitance, providing a sound, dust-free bonding substrate. Unsound areas must be made good with polymer modified repair mortar. Shoulders across the joint gap must be smooth, level and free of step. Not recommended over lightweight screed or sand/cement screed.
Mastic asphalt must be well sand-rubbed to remove surface nibs and excess bitumen. Surfaces should be ironed smooth and level across the joint line prior to membrane application.
All EXP J1 component materials are non-degradable and unaffected by UV light or ozone. The hybrid polyurethane nosings provide outstanding resistance to abrasion, impact and chemical attack from fuels, oils and de-icing salts — significantly more durable than conventional rubber nosing alternatives in heavily trafficked environments.
The EPDM extrusion maintains excellent flexibility across a wide service temperature range, ensuring joint movement capacity is retained in both extreme cold and summer heat conditions.
Installation presents no health and safety hazards when manufacturers' guidelines are followed for adhesives, sealants, polyurethane resins and chemical anchors. Refer to relevant product SDS sheets prior to installation. PPE appropriate to the materials in use must be worn at all times.
Technical design assistance is available for all EXP J1 applications, including assessment of movement criteria, substrate compatibility and integration with surrounding waterproofing systems. Custom extrusion profiles can be manufactured to suit non-standard movement or geometric requirements.
Continuity of the waterproof seal at columns, kerbs, upstands and internal/external corners is achieved through purpose-made kerb units and corner details. Consult the technical team at enquiry stage.
